# **EUROPE DISPATCH: Cracks in the Alliance Architecture

BRUSSELS — While diplomats were busy congratulating themselves on their “unified response” to Trump’s Alaska theater, the real story was unfolding in defense ministries across the continent: France and Italy have quietly told Washington to stuff its latest arms bazaar, refusing to join a US-led NATO initiative to purchase American weapons for Ukraine.[1][2]

This represents far more than budgetary squeamishness—it’s a calculated rebellion against the American military-industrial complex disguised as European strategic autonomy. President Macron’s office made clear that France has no intention of bankrolling Raytheon shareholders while French defense manufacturers struggle for market share, preferring instead to strengthen European defense industries through domestic procurement.[1]

Italy echoed this sentiment with characteristic bureaucratic elegance, citing “fiscal limitations” and preference for Italian-French SAMP/T systems already supplied to Ukraine rather than whatever overpriced American hardware the Pentagon is hawking this month. As one Italian defense official noted with delicious diplomatic venom, their decision should “not be considered as a lack of support for Ukraine but rather as a way to find alternative ways to contribute”—translation: we’ll help, but not by padding American defense contractor profits.[1]

The exquisite irony burns particularly bright given that this resistance emerges just as European leaders signed a flowery statement pledging “unwavering solidarity” and continued support for Ukraine. Apparently solidarity extends to moral support and photo opportunities, but stops short of writing blank checks to American arms dealers.[2]

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski articulated what everyone was thinking but few dared say: “Who should pay for American equipment? Should it be European taxpayers, or, in my opinion, should the aggressor pay for it using its frozen funds?” Translation from diplomatic to English: Why are we funding American corporations when we could make Russia pay for its own punishment?[1]

Meanwhile, Germany—ever eager to demonstrate Atlantic loyalty—has embraced the initiative “massively,” apparently convinced that purchasing American weapons systems somehow serves European interests. Chancellor Merz’s argument that this “increases pressure on Russia to negotiate peace” represents either remarkable strategic naivety or sophisticated rationale for what amounts to subsidizing American defense industries.[1]

Let the gods file their own paperwork—because apparently NATO’s most powerful alliance now resembles a medieval guild where members pick and choose which protection racket schemes deserve their participation.

“If the map catches fire, redraw the border.”
